Why don’t you talk like me?…… By Dr. Richard Reikowski, Au.D

And to this question, she said “I don’t know”.

This was quite an intriguing conversation starter as we chatted about the reasons behind why her friends speech sounds different and why she has speech with all of the speech sounds in her spoken words. We talked about the most common reason for a person who has severe hearing loss, early in life, without amplification or the ability to hear various speech sounds from others, may most often not be able to reproduce those sounds in spoken language. Therefore, the person with hearing loss may have a dull or lack of clarity in the voice as the common sounds missing are those found in the high frequency areas. Without hearing the speech sounds as an infant or young child, they most often aren’t reproduced. The high frequency areas give us the clarity or discernment of the words and speech. Speech therapy and amplification of the speech sounds, to make them audible, are a great start for those with hearing loss at an early age.
