When is the right time to replace a shirt? What about my Hearing Aid? By Dr. Richard Reikowski, Au.D Family Hearing and Balance Center

Torn shirt

It hadn’t occurred to me, until the other day, just how old my dress shirt was; while at work and putting on my lab coat, unbeknownst to me, there were several tears and worn areas near the arm where it was sewn into the shoulder area.

I have always liked this shirt for several reasons, I suppose. I liked the pattern, the way it fit, as well that it didn’t tend to wrinkle. Also, I just became quite comfortable looking into the closet in the morning knowing it was available to be worn. Now, I realized that the shirt had to be older than I imagined . Yes, it became time for it to be replaced and retired for good.

Yes, it was time. Yes, it was the right decision. Yes, I could find one very close in pattern, size, and one that would be wrinkle-free. No, it wasn’t wise to try to stitch up the arm and shoulder section, as the other side was soon to become affected. Considering these facts, the decision seemed easy. However, it was nonetheless something that caused a strange feeling when I put it in the garbage container. Do we become emotionally or personally connected to what we wear or own. Yes, this is assuredly true in many cases.

When considering patients in our offices with hearing aids that are several years old, is this true in situations of their hearing devices or hearing aids? When they become old, when they no longer work as well as they had performed, do they need repaired quite often? Yes, this is often the case when the hearing aids/devices are several years old, let’s say over 5 to 6 years old. When is that time when they need replaced? This can be considered a question having many differing answers, based on the person wearing with the hearing devices. Our staff will constantly remain devoted to serving each patient’s hearing needs in the most appropriate and ethical manner. By this, we will use our professional judgment and experience in Audiology and knowledge of digital hearing technology to make the best recommendations for your hearing needs. In these efforts, we help a patient to become more aware in how their quality of life, ability to hear and understand speech better, as well as to gain knowledge of solutions in all facets of hearing. Even though the hearing aid may fit comfortable and essentially function, it may not necessarily be resolving the needs in which it was intended.

During the process of each patient’s visit, we will continue to offer guidance, insight, and solutions to help. It’s what we are humbly committed to doing each day……
