When I close my eyes, “I see music and notes in color”…. By Dr. Richard Reikowski, Au.D Family Hearing and Balance Center Akron, Ohio

I had a most interesting talk with a patient recently about how he enjoys music….

This gentlemen enjoys opera, Wagner, classical concerts, as well as live performances. I would consider him an aficionado of fine music. He has had a bilateral sensorineural hearing loss for many years and strives fervently to acquire the best listening abilities he can find.

We had a conversation about music and he shared the most amazing description of how he hears as well as “sees” music. He stated that, “when I go to a performance I often close my eyes, I can see the music and notes in colors”. When I asked further about this unique and detailed description of his love of music he said that music and the notes, that compile music, generates colors in his mind. These colors help him to “feel and experience” the permanence to a much greater enjoyment. I was, and still am, so glad that he shared with me his love of music. It’s in these moments that we can all generate a love for what we do. We truly become much richer with experiences and relationships with people, as this. I am proud to serve his hearing needs and in a much greater sense, be a part of his improved quality of life and love of music!
