What’s that sound? :) By Kristie Dannemiller-Smith, M.A., CCC/A Clinical Audiologist Cardinal Hearing Centers Northfield and Parma, Ohio

I saw a patient yesterday, having profound hearing loss, for the fitting of her new powerful digital hearing aids. She has been wearing an older analog set of hearing devices for the past 15 years. When I fit her with the instruments she immediately noticed that she was hearing more sounds around the office. While we were discussing how to care for the hearing instruments, she started to get this funny look on her face. I asked her what she was hearing and she stated that she kept hearing an intermittent sound during our conversation. I noticed that she had her coat in her lap and it was made out of a material that makes noise. I touched her coat while she was trying to hear the sound and again and asked her if that was the sound she was noticing. Her face lit up and she said that it was the sound she was hearing and that she never knew that her coat made so much noise!!  She was so excited to hear so well for the first time in a long time. Her hands were shaking when we were finishing up because she was so excited!!

I Love my work!!  Kristie
