Using Sign Language for my beagle, “Eggo and Lucy”…..:) By Dr. Richard Reikowski, Au.D Family Hearing and Balance Center, Akron, Ohio

There are many ways in which we communicate with our pets. I wanted to share with you the very interesting conversation I had with a patient who uses sign language to communicate with her dog. As we talked, the phrases or commands, come, go, stay, no, off, were used with great success with her pet dog. She also used sign language while teaching her dog tricks. The visual cues heave meant a great means of communication between her and her pet.

Her dog truly watches the owners facial cues and body language. In fact, her dog tilts her head when she is focusing and listening to others. Have you done this with your pets? Was it helpful in communicating? Yes, there are so many ways in which we can convey meanings in our thoughts, phrases, and words, without……actually using words. 🙂
