Two Octogenarians playing in the surf…. By Dr. Richard Reikowski, Au.D Family Hearing and Balance Center

“It all started with two Octogenarians playing in the surf,” as two patients shared with me a story of why one of them had a cast on her right leg.

“We were playing and my husband fell on, specifically on my leg. From this, I received a broken ankle, but here’s the fun part….. the wave knocked him down.”

“We were playing in the surf having fun!”

“We had to laugh as there were youngsters playing in the ocean nearby and they said, “It’s nice to see older people playing in the surf. The kids were yelling to their friends…hey look at this older couple in the surf! One man came over as he saw that I had fallen, while still holding his beer saying, “It’s time to get out of the water ma’am.” They had to laugh later as they didn’t think of their age. Both smiling!

She thought it was just a sprain, as they went horse back riding and sailing. They scheduled an appointment with the doctor in the area and he said, “you did all those things?” She replied, that yes she did go horseback riding and sailing, but since she had so much pain in her back, she didn’t pay attention to the pain in her foot… Gotta laugh!!!!

The couple both agreed and said, “We didn’t do enough damage then so we’re going back in a few weeks for a family vacation again!!”… 🙂

Live life to the fullest, play in the surf, and laugh. Of course, after we had this fun talk we chatted about balance and dizziness concerns… 🙂

I enjoy seeing both of these “young-minded” patients for their hearing needs!

I just returned from the beach myself and my favorite part was the same….running, playing and splashing in the ocean. There is nothing in the world like “ocean therapy”!
