The Cochlear Implant Journey – A Series

Road, Highway, Journey, Asphalt, Travel, Landscape, Sky

This post series will cover the journey for a prospective cochlear implant candidate at Cardinal Hearing Centers. The journey can differ greatly when compared to pursuing a hearing aid but can be life-changing for those who qualify. This post will be specific to someone pursuing an implant through our office as a participant in the cochlear provider network.

Why Would I Want to Pursue a Cochlear Implant?

Cochlear Implantation is an option for patient’s who no longer perceive benefit from traditional hearing aids.  Candidates likely report an issue with the clarity of speech, even with the use of properly fit hearing aids. Significant damage to the auditory pathway can result in a hearing difficulties that cannot be overcome by increasing the volume of sound. Furthermore, the signal traveling along the pathway can be distorted before it reaches the auditory center of the brain. A cochlear implant is a surgical solution that bypasses the damaged portion of the auditory pathway to send a clearer auditory signal to the brain.

A great new topic of interest for many Kaylee! The cochlear implant is a great solution for those as you mentioned, that are no longer receiving benefit from their hearing aids.
