Anger, frustration, sadness, disturbance, hate, frustration are a few true ways that people with Misophonia describe the sounds that bother them. These are everyday sounds such as people sniffing, chewing, eating, smacking lips, certain speech sounds, clicking of a pen, and the tapping of a foot to name a few.
These sounds are not even noticed by most people but are “glaring and hurtful”, such as the bang of a gong, to one who experiences Misoponia. We do understand that there are many coming forward with these concerns and in this, we wish to remain an active help in the world of sound sensitivities. We are ever encouraged that there are potential ways to lessen these bothersome sounds. Our practice has offered various ways to help such as with custom made ear plugs with a varying degree of sound dampening capabilities.
It’s our role to help and listen to what’s on your mind and with Misophonia, what sounds are bothersome to you. We empathize and become engaged with each and every patient in search of understanding the concerns and finding solutions.
I often find myself getting annoyed by the continuous clicking of a pen. I’m glad we are able to offer some type of help to these patients.
Appreciate your sharing Tiffany. Yes, I am as well glad we can be a piece of the solution for these sound concerns.
Sometimes the most difficult challenges are the most silent and not visible to others.
Well said Dale. That is quite profound!
Excellent blog! Bill always complains to me how this one is sniffing or coughing in the cubicle near him at work, or the way they “slurp” their coffee in the morning, or this one has to make noise eating their yogurt…. ugh, why can’t they just be QUIET!!!
Thank you Gail!
It certainly appears that many are troubled by these sounds.
