Race cars and tinnitus: How did we find success? Dr. Richard Reikowski, Au.D Family Hearing and Balance Center Akron, Ohio

We have had the pleasure of being of service to many people that suffer from tinnitus. Below is an exaple of true success in helping this man to reduce his tinnitus and sensitivity to loud sounds. Tinnitus, or unwanted sounds, can be an affect of many years of excessive noise exposure. This gentleman was a race care driver that attempted to do his best to preserve his hearing by wearing multiple types of ear protection. Please, see the below message from one of our staff Audiologists Dr. Amy Welman, Au.D.  She has an excellent clinical mind as well as a personality that conveys kindness and humility…… Thank you to all those that allow us the opportunity to help their needs not only with hearing loss, balance issues, but tinnitus concerns. We serve as a team to help you. There are many potential solutions to any problem, our staff do their very best to offer a resolution that meets your specific concerns and goals.

“A patient  came to see me for a tinnitus assessment due to disturbingly loud tinnitus as well as a high sensitivity to loud sounds.  He has participated in car racing for many years but even using earplugs and earmuffs, he was uncomfortable with the sound of the car engines and also had a fear that the sound would cause his tinnitus to become worse.   He has now completed the Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment Program and after a few weeks into the tinnitus treatment he was able to enjoy car races (while still wearing hearing protection) without painful sensitivity to sounds.  He continues to use hearing protection to prevent hearing loss and keep his tinnitus from becoming more disturbing.  At a follow up appointment after his tinnitus treatment was complete, he reported he doesn’t need to use the device during the day and only occasionally uses it to help fall asleep if his tinnitus is mildly noticeable”.
