Nautical phrases and our hearing: What do they have in common? By Dr. Amy Welman, Au.D Family Hearing and Balance Center Akron, Ohio

“Learn something new every day, it’s good for the brain and the heart.”   I love to learn new things, random facts, or historical information, and especially when it relates to my passion of the  hearing system.  And there is no point in keeping all these fun facts in my head, so I’ll share them with you.   Recently I have had the pleasure of learning something new from a patient who is an educated boater.  As a boat is returning to a dock, the law states that a red light, or indicator must be visible on the right side of the boat and the saying is, “Red, Right, Returning”.   This is similar to how we distinguish right from left hearing instruments.  The instrument for the right ear always has a red indicator.

Amy, I have heard this nautical phrase and also found it interesting to see how the color red is found on the right hearing aid/device. Thank you for sharing this patients story!
