Mask-ulaization

A patient said this word as he discussed his hearing aids and his wife said, Maskulaization is the art of wearing a mask with the use of hearing devices…and let me tell you, it isn’t easy. We had to laugh! This is very true.

Wearing masks with hearing devices sitting over the ears creates a great deal of difficulty. Taking the mask straps off, often causes the hearing devices to slip off and may cause them to be lost. We discussed various styles of masks with two straps that can go below and above the ears, limiting touching the ears or hearing devices. Also, removing the mask straps from the top and back is also a better strategy.

He then smirked at me and said, you like the word maskulaization right? Absolutely, I sure do! LOL!!

Great word! I have heard quite a few patients explaining the difficulty of wearing masks and hearing aids. I always try to offer tips such as using a mask clip so the hearing aids don’t go flying!

For sure Dale. Masks also cause problems with glasses.
