It’s probably just old age, says a patient…..
Adjusting to sounds in our world can be new, different, and a bit tough at times, especially with a hearing loss. Hearing silverware and dishes clanging together can be heard with an awareness that is so very new after many years of diminished hearing. It’s often described as sharp, tinny, or near uncomfortable with patients, hearing these sounds with their new hearing aids. This gentleman in his 80’s said that he just needs to adjust to the new sounds and he feels confident of the sounds becoming more natural soon. It’s quite easy to adjust the specific high frequency sounds lower to help with the adjustment period, but he was fine with seeing what it’s like in a week or so.
I am fine with that as well. Most importantly, he knows, in addition to his wife, that we are committed to seeing him regularly and ensuring that he is pleased with the his new found hearing abilities.
I appreciate his confidence and motivation!
I do as well Kelly! It was very refreshing to hear!
Sometimes all you need is a little time and patience!
Well put Gail. Some time and patients is a key for sure.
I’ve heard the flushing toilets are also a big adjustment for some patients who hadnt heard that sound in “normal” volume for such a long time. Its like a new world for people.
Yes, correct Mary. Water and toilet flushing sounds can be quite new! It is a new world to adjust to.
Sometimes as we age we think things should stay the same…and they don’t.
Dale,
Yes, so true.
Thanks for sharing! I’m curious to see what he thinks after they’ve adjusted.
You’re welcome Tiffany! I am as well curious.
A lot of people take about a week to re-adjust to new sounds.
I can agree with that Amy! True.
