I’m old enough for it… By Dr. Richard Reikowski, Au.D

I’m old enough for it. This was said when I mentioned hearing devices will be helpful to improve communication with others. She said, yep, I’m old enough…. with a smile chuckle! I had to think more about the rational of hearing loss and is it for the old? Many feel that once they get old hearing loss develops. Yes, quite often this does occur but as we look deeper there may be other compounding issues such as the speed of hearing spoken words and then the need to making sense of these words especially in background noise and separating the noise from the speech.

During our youth, we often have a better ability to focus and concentrate within very noisy areas. As we age, this becomes more challenging. In cases where there is a hearing loss causing problems hearing others, we have wonderful and successful ways to help people to hear and communicate with others. That is, even in noisy areas or with distant speech, digital hearing devices or hearing aids can assist in controlling the challenging listening areas to allow people to engage with others in meaningful conversation.

A lot of people associate hearing aids with old age. While I would agree that a wide variety of hearing aid users are in their older age, I don’t see them as being for a certain age group. The reason they’re more common in older people is because their ears have experienced more and been exposed to noises longer. Wear and Tear!

      Tiffany,
Yes, they sure do associate hearing aids and loss to age. Nice thought of the “wear and tear”
