In support of finding the best possible solution for each patient’s needs, some solutions may involve professionals outside of our practice. That is, when surgery is recommended for the ears, the ENT and Otologists is the right recommendation.
I have known this particular patient for many years and during this time her hearing has progressed beyond where hearing devices, even the most powerful, were of little meaningful help. During our regular quarterly visits, we began talking of various solutions including and most importantly to pursue a cochlear implant consultation. When the right time presented itself, in addition to enough time to do all I could to adjust the current hearing devices to maximize communication, we found together that it was time to discuss, in greater detail, the benefits of the cochlear implant.
She and I shared together of her personal feelings of having surgery and beginning to hear in a different way. I encouraged her to look to such promise of a successful outcome to surgery placing her hearing near normal limits. She became ever more encouraged and excited! I referred her to a local and experience ENT for the cochlear implant and she decided to go.
She returned to my office and said that she had such confidence in this ENT/Dr and thus their visit has led her to make the decision to go forward. The doctor reinforced and believed in her improvements in hearing. Of course, the insurance and cost was a concern and those answers will come…..but the improvements in audibility are worth it, she said.
Yes, there is a risk with surgery. Yes, the hearing will change from what she knew she had or didn’t have. The doctor asked, do you want to go forward?, and she said yes!
I am excited for her! I am happy in the potential of her new world that she will soon experience. I am ever encouraging her to proceed. I am hopeful….. 🙂
Good luck and wishing her the utmost success!
