Fresh Fruit or Smoothies…… and Digital Hearing Aids……By Dr. Richard Reikowski, Au.D Family Hearing and Balance Center

If given the choice of having fresh fruit or a smoothie, which would you prefer?

Many wish to have choices of the fruits that they enjoy such as pineapple, blueberries, strawberries, etc. There are those who prefer their fruit separated so they can choose as they wish. On the other-hand, there are those who would rather enjoy a smoothie. They prefer their fruit to be blended.

How might fresh fruit or smoothies compare to new digital hearing aids? New digital hearing devices have such vast automatic functioning that they truly make decisions on their own without the wearer needing to make individual adjustments. New digital technology can make decisions to control for background noise, they search for speech within noise, they limit wind noise, they automatically connect to the cell phone for calls or streaming music. I might compare this automatic control similar to that of the smoothie. The technology blends the benefits of improved hearing without the wearer making adjustments. However, this same digital advanced hearing aid technology will allow patients to have complete control of their hearing aids, such as where the microphones are positioned to focus on speech, and the patient can change the noise management, as well as treble and bass. Patients can easily GPS locate their devices in cases where one is lost or misplaced. This can easily and successfully be handled through an app that we can download into a patient’s smartphone. We help patients individually, whether they prefer to choose the fresh fruit, or wish for a smoothie.

For those patients having tinnitus needs, we can help with customizing tinnitus treatment within their digital hearing aids/devices. It’s rather easy when working with such advanced hearing technology of the Resound LiNX2, and many others…..

It’s our position and responsibility to educate patients of the options that can be considered to best offer successful hearing and quality of life improvements.

A choice that always ends with a good result. I like the analogy.

Absolutely! I like the analogy of the fruit versus the smoothie….some patients want all of the technology together while others do not feel that they need “all of the bells and whistles” and want things separated.
