Cotton swabs and a cats’s ear……. By Kristie Dannemiller-Smith, M.A., CCC/A Cardinal Hearing Centers and Family Hearing and Balance Center

Last night, one of my adopted cats was scratching his ear to the point that the ear started to bleed. I looked into his ear and noted a lot of wax plugging him up. I grabbed a cotton swab and began to clean out his ear when my son walked in the room and gasped! He told me to stop using the cotton swab because it is not good to clean out the cat’s ear. “You may push it in deeper and make it worse. Isn’t that what you tell Grandma Deb??” I gently reminded him that I am an audiologist and do this several times a day and that a cat’s ears are not that much different from our own. He still was not convinced and was looking over my shoulder the entire time I was cleaning out Tango’s ear. After I had gotten all of the wax out and the cat looked relieved, my son told me that I could clean out the cat’s ears anytime with a cotton swab since I know what I am doing. LOL!! At least I won’t have to worry about him using cotton swabs!

Kristie,    I loved this story and how your son was thinking of the effects that cotton swabs can cause. I thought this picture may fit your story. A great one! Thank you.
